2008 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
The Jalen Rose Foundation will award five college scholarships totaling $10,000 each to high
school seniors residing in the city of Detroit, Michigan, who will begin college in the summer or
fall of 2008. A minimum of one scholarship will be awarded to a student from Jalen’s alma
mater, Detroit Southwestern High School. Each scholarship check will be payable to the
accredited two-year or four-year college that the recipient has chosen to attend – the payment
will be broken up into four installments ($2,500 per year) as long as the student remains in
good academic standing with the college. To renew the scholarship each year, the student
must provide The Jalen Rose Foundation with a grade report at the conclusion of each spring
semester along with a one page statement as to how far they have progressed in their college
goals.
Eligibility
Applicant must reside in Detroit and be a high school senior in good standing during the 2007-
2008 school year with a cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher. Students must be able to prove
acceptance by an accredited college or university before the scholarships are distributed.
Applicants must also demonstrate financial need by submitting a copy of their FAFSA form. The
scholarship will be forfeited if the student does not enroll in college during the summer or fall of
2008.
How to Apply
Applicant should fill out the back of this form and submit it with an official high school transcript,
a one page statement describing his or her goals for college (including how the student expects
to finance their college education), a copy of their FAFSA form and a copy of the student’s
college acceptance letter. Applicant should also submit two letters of recommendation (from
teachers, coaches, mentors, etc.) as well as obtain the appropriate verification signatures.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
We understand that students are sometimes hesitant to list the scholarships they have already
received. Please note that our review process considers whether the student will be able to
meet the financial obligations for the four years of school. Given that this scholarship is $2,500
a year for 4 years and matriculations often cost significantly more than that, we do like to have a
sense of how you will fill the funding gap (loans, scholarships, grants, etc.).
Deadline
All entries must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2008.
Selection
Scholarship recipients will be chosen by a committee consisting of Southwestern High School
alumnus Jalen Rose, representatives of The Jalen Rose Foundation and appointed members
of the Detroit community. Decisions will be made based on academic achievement and goals,
extracurricular/community activities and financial need. Recipients will be announced in May.
